a taste of
pesticide is not a pretty word

Insects are a problem any time you grow produce. But with organics, we don't use the synthetic pesticides that are used in conventional produce. Thank goodness. Here's just one example of how we do things differently: To control aphids on conventional lettuce, some non-organic farmers use Admire (Imidaclocloprid), a synthetic chemical. This material has been identified by the World Health Organization as "moderately toxic", and use of Admire may cause egg shell thinning in certain bird species and reduce bee populations.

In organic farming our best defenses against aphids are:

  1. Geographic isolation (farming where the bugs aren't);
  2. In-field "trap crops", which are non-edible plants that attract the bugs away from the edible produce; and
  3. Using "beneficial insects", which eat the bad bugs and then leave the produce field.

Just one small example of farming, the organicgirl® way.
