what does 'organic' mean?

Organic means that you know exactly what you are eating and what you are introducing into your body.

Here at organicgirl we realize that you want to make the healthiest choice possible when it comes to your body. Organic means that you know exactly what you are eating and what you are introducing into your body. The USDA National Organic Program (NOP) defines organic as follows: Organic food is produced by farmers who emphasize the use of renewable resources and the conservation of soil and water to enhance environmental quality for future generations. Organic food is produced without using most conventional pesticides; fertilizers made with synthetic ingredients or sewage sludge; bioengineering; or ionizing radiation. All organic food and beverage products sold in the United States, no matter where they were grown, must meet or exceed U.S. organic regulations. Do you realize that today it is estimated that 75% of processed food is genetically modified? That's a whole lot of unnatural ingredients that we don't know about. Before a product can be labeled "organic," a Government-approved certifier inspects the farm where the food is grown to make sure the farmer is following all the rules necessary to meet USDA organic standards. Companies that handle or process organic food before it gets to your local supermarket or restaurant must be certified, too. It's an awful lot of work to be certified organic, but we think you'll agree, it's well worth it.
